The first step in creating an effective jingle is the determination of the marketing or positioning statement. This "slogan" is the most important element of the jingle. It is also very important to determine how the business' name will be best sung. Any additional key bullets that may be sung must be determined, keeping in mind that the jingle is most effective using only "broad strokes" of information. Sometimes phone numbers or business locations are effective to sing.
The musical style to be employed must be consistent with the "image" to be created. Any mood from exciting to serene can be represented effectively by music. Understanding the demographics of the business to determine musical style is important.
Next, a "demo" is created using professional vocalists and musicians. This "demo" is very close to what the final jingle will be so that there is little guesswork on the part of the client. Any criticisms are voiced at this point; these may consist of choice of vocalist(s) or various musical instruments. The corrections are made on a subsequent demo for the client's approval.
When the client is satisfied, the final "mix" is done in which all of the musical elements are fine-tuned. All of the various 60, 30, and 10-second variations are placed on a CD for easy use in postproduction. This is when an announcer is added to fill all the pertinent information for the specific campaign. Please note that Adsongs does not produce any voice-over spots. These are done at the TV or radio station. Several CDs of the entire package are provided to the client.
It is important to note that the jingle is the client's property to freely use without restriction or residuals, only in the broadcast market where the client advertises. There are no time limits or re-licensing fees.
Often jingles are "seasonalized." A Christmas or summertime version can be very effective, retaining all of the essential musical elements, but refreshing the sound. Sometimes after running a jingle for several years, it can be effective to do a new arrangement with a new vocal or instrumental approach, keeping the same melody. Jingles also can be effectively used for "music on hold" while also employing an announcer to educate the caller.
